FI2 Ethics — revision for the matriculation exam

What the examiner expects from module FI2, and how to write that content into an answer so it earns points.

Etiikan tehtävässä sensori odottaa, että sovellat normatiivisia teorioita ja punnitset niitä vastakkain — et vain esittele niitä. Ydinkäsitteet

  • Etiikan tasot — normatiivinen etiikka (mikä on oikein ja miksi: teoriat siitä), metaetiikka (mitä moraaliväitteet ovat: ovatko ne tosia, mistä), soveltava etiikka (konkreetit kysymykset: eutanasia, eläinten oikeudet, ympäristö).
  • Deskriptiivinen vs. normatiivinen — kuvaileva väite kertoo, miten toimitaan (esim. sosiologinen havainto); normatiivinen väite kertoo, miten pitäisi toimia. Näiden sekoitus on Humen giljotiini: siitä mitä on, ei voi suoraan päätellä mitä pitäisi olla (is–ought-ongelma).
  • Moraali vs. etiikka — moraali on käytännön käsitys oikeasta ja väärästä; etiikka on moraalin filosofista, järkiperäistä tutkimista.
  • Arvo ja normi — arvo on tavoiteltava päämäärä (esim. hyvinvointi), normi ohjaava sääntö (esim. "älä valehtele").

How to train module FI2 into points

  1. Revise the module's core concepts — name them, do not paraphrase them.
  2. Write an exam-style answer on the topic. Give yourself the same time as in the exam.
  3. Read the score, what was missing, and the three corrections — Precise use of philosophers and theories (e.g. Kantian duty ethics vs. utilitarianism), counterexamples and justified conclusions.
  4. Write the same answer again after the corrections and see how far it rose.
