FI4 Truth — revision for the matriculation exam

What the examiner expects from module FI4, and how to write that content into an answer so it earns points.

Mitä sensori odottaa tästä moduulista

Totuutta koskeva tehtävä ei kysy, onko jokin väite tosi, vaan mitä totuus on ja mihin väitteen oikeutus nojaa. Sensori odottaa, että erotat toisistaan kolme eri kysymystä: totuuden luonne (totuusteoriat), totuuden kriteeri (miten totuutta arvioidaan) ja uskomuksen oikeutus (miksi uskomus on perusteltu). Korkeimmat pisteet syntyvät, kun sovellat teorioita samaan esimerkkiin, nimeät kunkin teorian klassisen vastaesimerkin ja liität kysymyksen tieteeseen tai julkiseen keskusteluun ilman, että vastaus lipsuu mielipidekirjoitukseksi.

Kolme kysymystä, joita ei saa sekoittaa

  • Mitä totuus on? — käsitteellinen kysymys totuuden luonteesta: korrespondenssi, koherenssi, pragmatismi, deflationismi.
  • Miten totuus todetaan? — totuuden kriteeri: havainto, koe, todistusaineisto, asiantuntijuus. Teoria totuudesta ja menetelmä sen toteamiseksi ovat eri asioita.
  • Milloin uskomus on oikeutettu? — tiedon oikeutus: uskomus voi olla tosi mutta perustelematon (arvaus) tai hyvin perusteltu mutta epätosi (fallibilismi).

How to train module FI4 into points

  1. Revise the module's core concepts — name them, do not paraphrase them.
  2. Write an exam-style answer on the topic. Give yourself the same time as in the exam.
  3. Read the score, what was missing, and the three corrections — Precise use of philosophers and theories (e.g. Kantian duty ethics vs. utilitarianism), counterexamples and justified conclusions.
  4. Write the same answer again after the corrections and see how far it rose.
