ENA4 English as a means of influence — revision for the matriculation exam

What the examiner expects from module ENA4, and how to write that content into an answer so it earns points.

ENA4 on argumentaation moduuli: mediakriittisyys, vaikuttaminen, yhteiskunnallinen osallistuminen ja mielipiteen perusteleminen. YO-kirjoitelman kannalta tämä on tärkein yksittäinen moduuli, sillä mielipideteksti (opinion essay), yleisönosastokirjoitus (letter to the editor) ja kantaaottava puhe ovat kokeen vakiolajeja. Ydinkäsitteet

  • Teesi (thesis statement) — kirjoittajan pääväite, joka esitetään johdannossa ja johon koko teksti sitoutuu.
  • Argumentti ja evidenssi (argument, evidence) — väite ilman perustelua on mielipide; perustelu ilman esimerkkiä jää ohueksi. Ketju: claim → reason → example.
  • Vasta-argumentti ja kumoaminen (counter-argument, rebuttal) — vastapuolen paras argumentti esitetään reilusti ja kumotaan: Opponents argue that... However, this overlooks...
  • Retoriset keinot (rhetorical devices) — retorinen kysymys, kolmen lista (cheaper, cleaner, and safer), toisto, me-puhuttelu (we owe it to future generations).
  • Kohdeyleisö ja tekstilaji (audience, text type) — yleisönosastokirjoitus alkaa viittauksella aiempaan juttuun ja päättyy nimimerkkiin; puhe puhuttelee kuulijoita suoraan.
  • Mediakriittisyys (media literacy) — lähteiden luotettavuus, mis- ja disinformaatio, algoritmien kuplat; itsessään yleinen esseeaihe.

How to train module ENA4 into points

  1. Revise the module's core concepts — name them, do not paraphrase them.
  2. Write an exam-style answer on the topic. Give yourself the same time as in the exam.
  3. Read the score, what was missing, and the three corrections — Varied structures and idiomatic expression; answering every part of the task.
  4. Write the same answer again after the corrections and see how far it rose.
