ENA5 A sustainable future and science — revision for the matriculation exam

What the examiner expects from module ENA5, and how to write that content into an answer so it earns points.

Mitä sensori odottaa tästä moduulista

ENA5 käsittelee tiedettä, teknologiaa ja kestävää kehitystä — ilmastonmuutosta, innovaatioita, tekoälyä, kiertotaloutta ja tulevaisuuden ratkaisuja. Tämä on YO-kirjoitelmien kestoteemoja: lähes joka tutkintokerralla ainakin yksi aihe liippaa ympäristöä tai teknologiaa. Sensori odottaa, että pystyt käsittelemään asiapitoista aihetta täsmällisellä sanastolla ja rakentamaan syy–seuraus-ketjuja: mistä ongelma johtuu, mitä siitä seuraa, mitä pitäisi tehdä. Ero keskitason ja huipputason tekstin välillä syntyy tässä moduulissa nimenomaan aihesanaston hallinnasta ja kyvystä esittää ratkaisuja, ei vain kauhukuvia.

Ydinkäsitteet

  • Kestävä kehitys (sustainable development) — kolme ulottuvuutta: ekologinen, taloudellinen ja sosiaalinen kestävyys; hyvä essee ei typisty pelkkään ilmastoon.
  • Hiilijalanjälki ja päästöt (carbon footprint, emissions) — perussanasto: greenhouse gases, fossil fuels, carbon neutrality, renewable energy sources.
  • Kiertotalous (circular economy) — jäte suunnitellaan pois: recycle, reuse, repair, reduce; disposable vs. durable; planned obsolescence.
  • Ilmastotoimet (mitigation vs. adaptation) — hillintä (päästöjen vähentäminen) ja sopeutuminen (seurauksiin varautuminen) — erottelu tuo esseeseen analyyttisyyttä.
  • Tieteellinen menetelmä (scientific method) — hypothesis, evidence, peer review, breakthrough, findings suggest — tiedeuutisesta kirjoittamisen työkalut.
  • Teknologinen murros (technological disruption) — tekoäly, automaatio, geenitekniikka: artificial intelligence, automation, ethical concerns, double-edged innovation.

How to train module ENA5 into points

  1. Revise the module's core concepts — name them, do not paraphrase them.
  2. Write an exam-style answer on the topic. Give yourself the same time as in the exam.
  3. Read the score, what was missing, and the three corrections — Varied structures and idiomatic expression; answering every part of the task.
  4. Write the same answer again after the corrections and see how far it rose.
