ENA8 Communicate and influence through speech — revision for the matriculation exam

What the examiner expects from module ENA8, and how to write that content into an answer so it earns points.

ENA8 on suullisen kielitaidon moduuli, ja sen päättää oma suullisen kielitaidon koe — mutta kirjallisessa kokeessa moduuli näkyy siinä, miten hallitset puhutun englannin rekisterit ja vuorovaikutuksen kielen. Ero ENA4:ään kannattaa pitää mielessä: ENA4 opettaa argumentin rakenteen ja retoriikan analyysin, ENA8 sen, miten argumentti esitetään elävässä tilanteessa toisille ihmisille. Sensori odottaa kolmea asiaa: rekisterin osuvuutta (kenelle puhut), vuorovaikutuksen fraaseja (miten otat ja annat puheenvuoron) ja kohteliasta mutta selkeää erimielisyyttä. Yleisin heikkous on ääripäissä: joko töykeä suoruus (that's wrong) tai niin pehmennetty muotoilu, ettei kantaa enää löydy.

How to train module ENA8 into points

  1. Revise the module's core concepts — name them, do not paraphrase them.
  2. Write an exam-style answer on the topic. Give yourself the same time as in the exam.
  3. Read the score, what was missing, and the three corrections — Varied structures and idiomatic expression; answering every part of the task.
  4. Write the same answer again after the corrections and see how far it rose.
