MAY1 Numbers and equations — revision for the matriculation exam
What the examiner expects from module MAY1, and how to write that content into an answer so it earns points.
Mitä sensori odottaa tästä moduulista
MAY1 antaa lyhyen matematiikan tärkeimmät arkityökalut: lukujen ja lausekkeiden varma käsittely, prosenttilaskenta ja ensimmäisen asteen yhtälön ratkaisu. Lyhyen matematiikan YO-kokeessa prosenttilaskenta on lähes joka vuosi mukana — usein arkisessa kuosissa: alennukset, korotukset, verot, korot. Sensori odottaa, että ratkaisusta näkyy mitä lasketaan ja mistä perusarvosta: pelkkä laskimen antama luku ilman merkittyä laskutoimitusta ja sanallista vastausta jää vaille täysiä pisteitä.
Ydinkäsitteet
- Prosentti — sadasosa: p % luvusta a on (p/100) * a. Esim. 24 % luvusta 50 on 0,24 * 50 = 12.
- Kasvukerroin — p %:n korotus vastaa kertomista luvulla 1 + p/100 ja p %:n alennus luvulla 1 - p/100. Esim. 15 %:n alennus: kerroin 0,85.
- Perusarvo — luku, josta prosentti lasketaan. Prosenttitehtävän virheet johtuvat lähes aina väärästä perusarvosta.
- Prosenttiyksikkö — prosenttilukujen erotus: kannatus nousi 20 %:sta 23 %:iin eli 3 prosenttiyksikköä (mutta 15 % suhteellisesti).
- Muuttuja ja lauseke — kirjain edustaa lukua; lausekkeen arvo lasketaan sijoittamalla, ja samanmuotoiset termit yhdistetään (3x + 2x = 5x).
- Yhtälö — kahden lausekkeen yhtäsuuruus; ratkaistaan tekemällä sama toimenpide molemmille puolille.
- Verranto — kahden suhteen yhtäsuuruus a/b = c/d; ratkaistaan ristiinkertomalla ad = bc.
- Potenssin perusidea — a^n on toistuva kertolasku; kymmenpotenssit suuruusluokkien ilmaisuun (2,5 * 10^6 = 2 500 000).

How to train module MAY1 into points
- Revise the module's core concepts — name them, do not paraphrase them.
- Write an exam-style answer on the topic. Give yourself the same time as in the exam.
- Read the score, what was missing, and the three corrections — Visible intermediate steps, choosing and justifying the model or formula, use of units, and interpreting and sanity-checking the answer.
- Write the same answer again after the corrections and see how far it rose.
